Many residents woke up to a crisp breeze and clear skies, a welcome change from the hot and humid summer months. Some even bundled up in jackets and sweaters as they headed out the door.
Temperatures dipped to 51 Sunday morning and reached 47 this morning in Jacksonville. This was our first cool snap of the fall season, something we haven’t felt since April 18.
The National Weather Service said that the low temperature this morning was even chillier at 42° Fahrenheit, in Brunswick which is about 25 degrees below normal for this time of year!
The cooler weather is due to a cold front that moved through the area Saturday but after one more morning in the 50s, highs return to the upper 80s by the end of the week.
When will the real cold arrive?
However, if you’re looking for a taste of winter, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. A review of the last 30 years shows the average date for the first frost in Jacksonville is December 8th.
But freezes can happen early like last year’s pre-Christmas freeze or even before Thanksgiving on November 12, 2011. The latest is April 8.
