DCPS: Argument that escalated led to shooting at First Coast High

First Coast High School Principal Justin Fluent said that no one was injured in the shooting.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Four people were detained after a shooting took place in a parking lot at First Coast High School in Jacksonville Thursday, according to Duval County Public Schools.

In a message sent to First Coast High School families, Principal Justin Fluent said enhanced security was being enforced at the school Friday “out of an abundance of caution.” Students followed their normal procedure of being screened through the school’s Evolve system and the school was on a lockout, too, according to Fluent.

Fluent said after a basketball game that was played on the campus Thursday evening, an altercation in the school’s parking lot “escalated into shots being fired into a vehicle.” He said no one was injured and that they are not aware of a threat to the school.

Just three days prior to the incident on Thursday, First Coast High School was on lockdown after two 911 calls from the same number reported a person was in distress and planned to “cause harm” at the school. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the calls appear to be a “hoax.”

“We just wanted you to be aware of this situation and the steps we are taking to keep students and staff safe,” Fluent said in the message. “That is always our first goal, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we implement these procedures. Thank you for your support. Good-bye.”
