Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are on the rise. Here’s how to stay safe

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – State and federal agencies are warning shoppers to be careful when buying gifts with lithium-ion batteries.

That’s because fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are on the rise.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded over 25,000 instances of fires involving 400 types of devices over the past decade.

Video from the Fire Safety Research Institute showed that once a battery fire starts it can quickly spread and become extremely difficult for firefighters to put out.

According to the institute, you can follow the ‘Take CHARGE’ initiative to stay safe.

When purchasing look for products that are listed or safety-certified. Handle lithium batteries with care and only use the charging equipment that comes with the product and never charge overnight. Always stay alert for warning signs and recycle devices and batteries properly. Do not throw them in the trash, take them to the recycling center.

Most importantly, when it comes to fires, have an escape plan and share it with your family. And if you see a fire immediately get out and call 9-1-1.
