Fla. residents report gas outage in area with hundreds of homes

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Residents in a north St. Johns County community say a gas outage is impacting homes in a gated community with more than 630 homes and thousands of people.

Scott Forshey-Friedman, the HOA board president at the Celestina Community on Race Track Road says homes do not have hot water nor heat if they are heated by gas (some are electric).

First Coast News spoke with a Teco Peoples Gas company representative on the phone who confirmed there is an outage, but we are waiting to learn more from a public relations spokesperson.

There is notification at the top of the company’s website with this information: “Update Monday, Dec. 18 at 11 p.m.: We are aware of a natural gas outage in Jacksonville. Our crews are in the process of turning off meters so we can begin making repairs on Tuesday, Dec. 19. We will continue to provide regular updates. As part of our restoration process, we will need access to meters and appliances.”

Forshey-Friedman says the outage started just before 6:00 p.m. Monday evening. Because it’s cold and six days before Christmas, he says he’s worried about how long the outage may last. He says company representatives in the community described an extensive process in what it would take to fix the outage.
