The Longest Table, where hundreds of residents break bread together at a table, will celebrate coming together as one city, but the event won’t be outside this year.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An event drawing hundreds of people every year from all corners of Jacksonville is taking place Wednesday evening.
The Longest Table, where residents break bread together at a table winding through downtown, will celebrate coming together as one city, but it won’t be taking place in the same location it has before. This year, the event will be at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Downtown Jacksonville due to the weather forecast.
The Longest Table usually stretches 600 feet through downtown, blocking off streets. Jax Chamber organizers say 700 people attended last year and even more are expected this year. For a city that’s nearly 850 square miles, it can be difficult for everyone to see eye-to-eye, but organizers of the event encourage you to sit next to someone you don’t know and share ideas.
Sel Buyuksarac and his wife do something similar to the goal of this event in their home every year. Yet, Buyuksarac says he has not missed a ‘Longest Table’ event and will be volunteering Wednesday.
“Because of this kind of event, I have the opportunity to meet so many different human beings and get together and call them my community and my neighbors,” Buyuksarac said. “I love it.”
The event, which is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., is free, but all the tickets are reserved for it.
On the topic of money and Thanksgiving, turkey prices are just over a quarter cheaper per pound than last year, according to a Wells Fargo report.
