VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 40-year-old Jacksonville man was killed Saturday night on Interstate 95 in Daytona Beach after a trooper pulled him over, which led to the driver not following the trooper’s commands before struggling with them, walking into traffic and being struck by multiple vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
WKMG Click Orlando reports that the wreck occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near LPGA Boulevard, troopers said.
According to the preliminary statement, the trooper conducted the traffic stop referencing a possible impaired driver, telling the man to remain in his vehicle. The man left the vehicle and failed to listen to the trooper’s verbal commands, not complying as the trooper told him to get on the ground, FHP said. The trooper then deployed a Taser, resulting in “a brief struggle” on the inside paved shoulder of I-95 before the man began to walk away in a westerly direction, the statement reads.
The man entered the center southbound lane in front of approaching traffic, where troopers said he was struck by multiple vehicles. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FHP.
The wreck left no others with serious injuries, troopers said.
Southbound travel was diverted from the highway onto LPGA Boulevard as the crash was investigated, yet lanes were seen to be clear Sunday morning on traffic cameras.
