GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — Glynn County Schools say a middle school student in Brunswick brought an unloaded 14-round magazine to school Thursday.
The school district says they were alerted around 8:30 a.m. by a faculty member at Jane Macon Middle School. Students were engaged in “inappropriate activities” in bathrooms at the school, the district says, and is how school administrators discovered the gun magazine.
The school district told First Coast News there was no gun or ammunition found and no one was hurt, as “there’s no viable threat” to students or staff at the school and appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.
“It [gun magazine] was immediately secured and the student has been placed in a supervised location as a threat assessment is conducted by our school resource officers,” the school district told First Coast News in a statement.
The following is the school district’s full message to parents/guardians of students at the school:
“Dear Eagle Families,
Around 8:30 a.m. today, our administration was alerted by a faculty member that students were engaged in inappropriate activities in our bathrooms. While no activities were in progress during the investigation, we did discover that one student was in possession of an unloaded 14-round magazine. Please note that there was no gun or ammunition found. It was immediately secured and the student has been placed in a supervised location as a threat assessment is conducted by our school resource officers.
Appropriate disciplinary action is being taken, and while there’s no viable threat to our students or staff, situations like these provide a learning opportunity. If you see something, say something. We all play an important role in creating a safe learning environment at school. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.”
