Tremayne Robinson will serve 15 years in prison with four years of time served for the 2019 death of 17-year-old Alayshia Powe.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A grieving mother says justice was not served.
More than 4 years after 17 year old Alayshia Powe was shot and killed on Jacksonville’s Westside her killer learned his fate.
Tremayne Robinson walked into the courtroom in shackles to learn his sentence more than 4 years after shooting and killing Powe in July of 2019.
“This is a very devastating case to all parties involved, especially the victim’s family,” said Judge Jonathan Sacks before imposing the sentence.
Robinson was 17 years old when he shot and killed Powe, but was charged as an adult. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for manslaughter with another 5 years in prison for evidence tampering. The sentences will run concurrent and with time served while he was in jail during trial, Robinson will be released from prison in 11 years.
“He was not held accountable, just more so like a slap on the wrist,” said Powe’s mother Letitia Strickland, “I’m just astonished, I do not feel like justice was served.”
Strickland said the punishment for her daughter’s killer was light and added that she deals with the pain of losing her little girl everyday.
“Even if it would have been the maximum 30 years, it’s never going to bring my daughter back,” said Strickland, “but I do feel it could have been longer because it feels like we were actually given a life sentence. We have to deal with this, a life sentence was given to us.”
As her daughter’s killer was led out of the courtroom to spend the next 11 years in prison, Strickland remembered her daughter as a beautiful soul.
“We saw her transform into a beautiful young lady and I just wish that I had one more day just to spend with her and let her know how proud I am of her,” said Strickland.
Letitia Strickland said that her 17 year old daughter Alayshia was the employee of the month at the McDonald’s where she worked before she was killed. Strickland also said Alayshia had plans to go to college and law school to eventually become an attorney.
Tremayne Robinson has 30 days to appeal his sentence.
