Neighborhood shocked 2 vehicles fled scene after hitting woman

Police are looking for 2 vehicles that they say fled the scene of a deadly hit-and-run on Avenue B Wednesday night.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman is dead and police are on the lookout for the cars that ran her over. JSO tells us that woman in her 60s was struck by 2 vehicles Wednesday night on Avenue B in Northwest Jacksonville.

Descriptions of the vehicles are still somewhat vague at this point, but police are looking for a dark colored SUV and a white Chevrolet sedan that they believe struck and killed the woman in the 5600 block of Avenue B. Police say both vehicles fled the scene westbound on Edgewood Avenue.

Traffic was flowing as normal a day after a woman was hit and killed by 2 cars on Avenue B, but residents are still stunned by the jarring news that multiple people would drive off after hitting and killing someone.

“That’s crazy, it’s disappointing that people are committing crimes,” said Jeremiah Barnes, “it’s sad too.”

Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church is one block north on Avenue B from where police say the woman in her 60s was struck and killed. Evangelist Joyce Ponder said it’s disheartening to hear of a hit-and-run in this community.

“For someone to lose their life and for someone to leave off and not stay, it goes to show you the compassion that we lack in our community,” said Ponder, “it’s traumatic, it’s traumatic for the family of that person, it’s traumatic for the residents of this area.”

Barnes saw cop lights Wednesday night but didn’t learn the reason why they were in his neighborhood until Thursday afternoon. He said many residents are reluctant to talk with police, but a situation like this should be different.

“If it’s important stuff like this I think you should tell the police because you got to get these people off the streets,” said Barnes.

Again, police are looking for a dark colored SUV and a white Chevrolet sedan, which is possibly an Aveo. They say both vehicles struck the woman who died from her injuries on Avenue B and then fled the scene on Edgewood Avenue.
