Pro basketball team Jacksonville 95ers announce new home, partnership with Jacksonville University

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville’s newest professional basketball team, the Jacksonville 95ers, announced its new home and partnership with Jacksonville University.

Kevin Waters, owner of the Jacksonville 95ers, talked about his vision for the team and its impact on the community during a press conference Tuesday.

“It’s been a dream of mine to do this since 2008… and I have a spiritual connection with the city,” Waters said.

Waters said he doesn’t want the 95ers to only entertain the community, but to establish itself among the surrounding nonprofits.

“We’re here. We’re dedicated to not only the state, but the St. Johns community, and you will see that at different locations throughout the state,” Waters said.

City government officials also attended the press conference to express their support for the team.

John Phillips, a legal advisor for the 95ers, said the team’s mission is to give opportunities through basketball.

The 95ers will play in The Basketball League, an association with 49 teams, and will represent the south division.

The basketball team has aspirations to become affiliated with the NBA’s G League, according to a statement from the organization. The team prepares players, coaches, officials, and others for the NBA.

“We look forward to having fun in this community and making our gameday experience the best ever,” Waters said.

The 95ers season starts in March 2024 at Jacksonville University.
