Clearing skies and much colder temperatures are on the way. This round of the winter chill will continue through the start of the New Year then turning cool and damp.
These conditions sound great for a cozy fire, but if this is the first time you are using the fireplace a few simple steps could save you and your family from a smoke-filled house or worse. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire departments across the country respond to thousands of residential structure fires involving home heating equipment. One of the primary causes of these fires, the failure to properly inspect and clean solid fuel appliances and chimneys.
Here are some steps you can take between professional maintenance.
-
Check for interior and exterior cracks in the masonry and brick.
-
Make sure the chimney cap is secure and clear. This is a favorite for bird and bug nests.
-
Check for buildup in the chimney. Excessive creosote is the number one cause of chimney fires. Anything above 1/8 of an inch is potentially hazardous.
-
Check the firebox. This is the area where the wood burns. Remove any ashes and inspect the inside for crumbling brick or cracks.
-
Finally, test the damper. This is often called the flue, but the flue is actually where the smoke escapes. The damper is placed inside or at the entrance of the flue to control ventilation. Make sure this is open!
Lastly, never leave a fire unattended. Cozy up, cuddle and be safe.
