TSA provides reminders for travelers ahead of Spring Break

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As travelers gear up for spring break activities, the Transportation Security Administration wants to remind travelers what can and cannot be brought through airport security.

TSA expects a 6% increase in spring break travel nationwide this year, including an 8% increase in travel out of Jacksonville.

Agents at the Jacksonville International Airport demonstrated Tuesday some of the most commonly surrendered items, including sunscreen, hair products and household food items.

Other confiscated items included weapons like knives, firearms and even a grenade.

TSA reminds travelers that they can travel with a firearm, but it must be stored properly inside a suitcase and checked in at the airline ticketing counter. If not, you could face a hefty fine.

“If you do not do that, we’re going to get law enforcement involved, and you’re going to get a penalty from TSA, which can go upwards of $15,000. Very costly, very avoidable mistake. To give you the numbers — last year, we had a total of 74 firearms confiscated here at the security checkpoint. So far this year, we’re at 10,” TSA Regional Spokesperson Mark Howell said.

So, if you’re traveling, remember the 3-1-1 rule.

Any liquid, including sunscreen, needs to be three ounces or less, in a one-quart bag and one per person.

Also, it’s best to arrive early to give yourself plenty of time to find parking and get through security.
