Why are police near the rest stop on I-95 in St. Johns County?

Police say the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on I-95 south near the rest stop as K-9s are on the ground to assist in the search.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — This is a developing story.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office tells First Coast News that they are assisting the Florida Highway Patrol Thursday morning in the search for a passenger who took off running into the woods during a traffic stop on Interstate 95.

According to St. Johns County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Harrigan, the driver of the vehicle that was stopped is secure. In addition, police say the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on I-95 south near the rest stop as K-9s are on the ground and a drone and helicopter are in the sky to assist with the search.

The St. Johns County School District told First Coast News that Liberty Pines Academy is on a soft lockdown Thursday.
